A flight buddy is a passenger who adds up to two dogs or cats onto their ticket and “escorts” them from one airport to another.
What does a “flight buddy” mean to the animal rescue community?
To put it simply… for a dog or cat, flight buddies are the deciding factor between a life on the streets (or a kennel in a shelter) and the security of a safe and loving home abroad. There are thousands of dumped animals in Bahrain living on scraps, starving, tortured or otherwise in danger on a daily basis.
The Bahrain Animal Rescue Centre (BARC) houses 370 dogs and 150 cats in a space that is overcrowded and with critical cases coming in weekly, and little to no adoptions, it has become overwhelming and we are in desperate need of help.
BARC works with several rescue organizations in Canada who are willing to help relocate and home our animals but, without Flight Buddies, this becomes virtually impossible. If you are flying to Canada on Lufthansa or KLM and are willing to be a 'Flight Buddy' then you would not only be offering your assistance to the animal rescue efforts in Bahrain but you would also be playing a critical role in rescuing two animals in need and transporting them to a loving home and family that awaits them.
How can I participate?
1. Share your intended travel dates as far in advance as possible.
2. When booking your ticket, ensure that you can book two animals and that the layover time on your stop over is suitable (we can guide you with this)
3. Two to three days prior to travel, you will be asked to come to the ministry at Buri to confirm that you are the passenger flying the dogs/cats. This takes approximately 10-30mins.
4. Come to the airport 30 mins earlier than you usually would at check in. BARC will bring the dogs/cats, pay the fees, and hand you their paperwork.
5. Upon arrival at your destination, you will take the dogs off the carousel with your luggage (we will pay for porter fees), then go through customs and hand in the paperwork previously given to you.
6. A member from the rescue organization will be waiting at arrivals to take the animals from you.
